Discover Authentic Mykonos

  • Wasn't sure if you might want a City Tour in Mykonos that you can do AM or PM
  • (so can be done the day you arrive)

Highlights

- Our experienced tour guide will show you the authentic side of Mykonos
- You will discover by touring the villages, the little harbors
- See the magnificent remote beaches

Itinerary (4 hours)

After your pick up from your hotel, we will start from the old port of Mykonos, to enjoy the tour around the island from a different point of view, full of traditional and authentic images and experiences.

Our first stop will be the picturesque small port of St. Ioannis, an area which was named after a small church dedicated to Saint Ioannis and one of great historical significance. We will visit the church, along with the Saint's cell where the annual fair in his name is also being held. The small port in front of us is the starting point of the local fishing boats which are protected here from the island's strong north winds.

Right afterward we will depart towards the Mykonos' airport, where we will have a panoramic view of the airport's runway and perhaps we are lucky enough to catch a plane taking off or landing. Leaving the airport behind us, we will be headed towards Ano Mera Village and pass through one entirely different scenery, one of the island's most typical agricultural and stock raising areas, where we will observe small local cultivated fields and even some domestic animals in local family-owned farms.

After capturing all these images of the Mykonian countryside and its lifestyle, we will reach the farm of the Mykonian Spiti, where we will be guided by our escort and always under the directions of the farm's superintendent. Whoever wishes may also use the farm's tools and get involved with the farming work and tasks in co-operation with the superintendent. Take this opportunity to get closer to the domestic animals and the farm's traditional organic cultivation. A light snack lunch will be offered to all visitors, consisting of local products from the traditional farm itself.

Next, we will head towards the Ano Mera village's colorful square, where one of the island's two monasteries is located ("Panagia Tourliani") and we will be guided through its chambers. You can also take a glimpse at the nearby open-air market with vegetables and other local products.

As we continue our tour, we will be passing by some of the most distant beaches of Mykonos, named "Kalo Livadi", "Kalafatis" and "Aghia Anna". Our next destination will be the abandoned establishment of the now inoperative mines of Mykonos. Until some years ago useful lignite was extracted here from the soil to be used in various ways. Up next we will reach the beautiful narrow streets of Mau, at the end of which the Mykonos dam is located, constructed to meet the needs of the island in the water.

Then, we will proceed to a very well known site where almost all the island's visitors have made a stop, in order to capture a panoramic Mykonos Town photo shooting. Following the picture taking we will drive you back to your hotel or a location of your choice.

Optional add-on for a visit to Armenistis Lighthouse. This old lighthouse stands like a sentinel over the Armenistis area and is a testimony to Mykonos' maritime history while remaining fully functional today. In order to visit the Armenistis lighthouse, we take the road from Agios Stefanos. At the location of "Fanari" which translates to "lantern" in Greek, the scenic coastal road also offers some of the most spectacular views on the island just 6.5km from Mykonos Town.

It was manufactured in 1891. The altitude of the tower is 19 meters and the height of focal plane is 184 meters. The mechanism of the first lamp of "Armenistis" is exposed outside by the building of Aegean Naval Museum that is located in a traditional building of 19th century, in center of Mykonos, near to place Three Wells (Tria Pigadia).

The Armenistis lighthouse is worth visiting because of the breath-taking scenery around it. From there you can see all the boats arriving and departing Mykonos, while Tinos island looks as if it is right next to you from there. Its strategic position offers scenic views of the surrounding areas and is well worth visiting to get a sense of the island’s fascinating history and enjoy its spectacular beauty.

I am trying to keep it at 4* hotels as European hotels are not true to our standards & I want to make sure you will be happy with where you will be spending your nights. For Rome I will book you 1 room for the 4 of you but for Sorrento I will book 2 as the availability for rooms that can accommodate the 4 of you is very limited & you won't be comfortable. Please let me know if these are acceptable.

Rome

For Rome I am focusing on hotels that are City Center so that you will have easy access to walking & exploring the area. I am also trying to book hotels that include breakfast.

Sorrento or surounding area

In Sorrento or nearby areas, I am focusing on trying to get you locations that are near the water or at least have sea view options. Just know that Amalfi beaches are not like tropical beaches where it's soft sand. The beaches are more rocky with clear water.

Itinerary (13 hours)

The day starts when your expert, English-speaking tour leader picks you up in Rome in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and whisks you off to the Tuscan countryside. Your first stop is the UNESCO world heritage hill town of Pienza. Here you’ll wander the beautiful streets, seeing views over the countryside and shopping for food and wine if you wish. Your tour leader will introduce you to traditional Tuscan delicacies like pecorino cheese and wild boar, and point out the best ceramics stores.

Next, we’re heading over to an organic, family-run farm. After a tour of the farm, it’s time to sit down for a Tuscan feast of local, seasonal ingredients straight from the fields. In between chats with the farm owners you will sip on local wines and enjoy incredible views over the famous Val d’Orcia region.

After lunch, you’ll go to Montalcino, a hill town famous, among many other things, for its beautiful castle. With special, extended access tickets you can climb the lookout towers and gape at the views of the surrounding countryside or snap off a few pictures that will be the envy of all your friends back home.

To end the day you’ll visit an authentic vineyard for a guided tour of the vines and wine cellar. And what would a visit to a Tuscan vineyard be without a full tasting? Try a flight of some of the region’s best wines and feel free to buy a bottle or two (once again, with no obligation) to stash in your bag.

We won’t spoil a perfect day with a large group. Enjoy an intimate group of 18 people or fewer with an expert, English-speaking leader to facilitate your journey and make introductions as well as an expert driver who knows the country roads better than anyone. Our goal is to give you a truly Italian experience that will leave you hankering for Tuscany long after you’ve returned home.

Once we arrive in Capri, you’ll take a boat ride to the popular and dreamy “Grotta Azzurra” (Blue Grotto), where sunlight passes into an underwater cavity and shines through the seawater, creating a magical blue reflection. Original Quote

For this trip, I know you wanted to focus on the Amalfi Coast with some exploration in Rome. With August being a high-peak season, I've tried to give you a few options based on availability as well as what you feel can work for you. I'm giving you a land option as well as a couple of cruise options so you can decide what is the better value for you with what the rates are at this time in Italy. I tried to make them as "all-inclusive" as possible; however, the land option does not include food & drinks (except for maybe breakfast & some tours that include food) unlike the cruise options which do include food, drinks (including alcohol) & some excursions.

Rome & Amalfi Coast (Land)

This itinerary consists of Flights to Rome from LAX then return flight from Naples. I felt this best to make the most of your time there so you are not wasting time commuting. When you arrive in Rome you will be there for 2 nights so that you can relax a little after your long travel day & explore. Maybe even a daytrip to Tuscany wine region. Then you all will make your way to Sorrento where you will be there for 6 nights. This quote includes a total of 3 excursions.

  • In summary,  this includes:
  • Roundtrip Flights
  • Airport Private Transfers
  • Transportation Rome to Sorrento
  • 2 nights in Rome
  • 6 nights in Sorrento
  • 1 excursion in Rome
  • 2 excursions in Amalfi Coast

Cruise Options

I wanted to give you some cruise options since you had mentioned wanting to visit another country. Also, I feel cruises definitely give you more value for your money as it is pretty much all-inclusive. As you can see, the rates are definitely on the higher end due to High Season in Italy as well as everything else (gas prices, rise in travel, etc.) so to me, cruises at least give so much in time & value. Also, Europe itineraries tend to be more port intensive so you actually are on Land more then you are at sea but you have the added value of not having to pack & unpack because your "Hotel" is travelling with you 🙂 The only thing is that I'm not sure if your dates are flexible at all. Since we are at the mercy of the itineraries, I chose dates that kind of fit.

Below are 2 cruise lines that I feel you would enjoy. Azamara is more Luxury but I feel really gives value for what they offer. Celebrity is the other option that I felt you would like as it is a premium line.

Azamara: Best of the Med Voyage
Azamara 12nt Best of Med

This trip is a total of 14 nights of accommodations since the voyage is 12 nights. It includes 2 nights in Venice pre-cruise. They are also having an offer right now for $1000 On Board credit per stateroom. • In summary,  this includes:
  • Roundtrip Flights (Venice-Barcelona)
  • Airport Private Transfer (Venice with Water transfer)
  • Port Transfer (Ravenna & Barcelona)
  • 2 nights in Venice (1 room for 4)
  • 12 nights Best of the Med Voyage (11 ports)
