Excursions
Excursion - May 28th: Full Day PRIVATE Tahiti Tour (8hrs)
Papeete Black Sand Beach

Overview

We will go on a journey of discovery of the most authentic aspects of the Tahitian culture. We will immerse into the local history, enjoy the beautiful scenery the island is very well known for, understand from a native's perspective (the guide) what the island is really about and a slight touch on our ancient mythology as a treat. All of this topped with an enjoyable ride around its shores to finally reach the Tautira village, the Highlight of this tour and where the road ends. Where our ancestors (or our "Tupuna") lived and also where the first encounters with the Europeans happened. Captain James Cook or the spanish Boenechea, just to name a few. Come and treat yourself well and experience Tahiti differently.

Itinerary
  • Stop At:   Papeete
  • We will begin with an 1 hour and half (approx) driving "City Tour" of Pape'ete and its surroundings. A brief introduction of the main artery of French Polynesia to understand what Tahiti has become since 1842. We will drive by the "Marché", which is the local famer's market and fisheries of Papeete, the Cathedral, the Territorial Assembly (possible to stop at the Queen's baths). We will come across many memorials as we drive by as you shall receive feedbacks and commentaries from your guide. This will give you an overview of what Tahiti has become, its relationship with France today since it became one of its provinces.
  • Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Plage Vaiava
  • After this short introduction of the city of Papeete, we shall drive to one of the joint on the week-end called the "Vai-ava beach" or known as "PK 18" (or point marker 18 km). This site is perfect for family outings, suntanning and free snorkeling. It is also protected by a sandbar from undertows and ocean currents. A picturesque view to Moorea is accessible from there. We shall stop by.
  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Arahurahu Marae
  • Next, we will visit a "Ahu" or an ancient Polynesian Temple our ancestors called "Marae". These were special places where our ancients (or our "Tupuna") worshipped, celebrated, mourned, sacrificed, gave offerings to the Superior gods (Ta'aroa, Tane, Ruahatu and most recent Oro) and our ancestors. A place filled with question marks and unresolved enigmas.
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Maraa Grotto
  • The "Mara'a" grottos (literally means 'water surge') is located onto the next district of Papa-ra. It is a dug-out cave carved out by ocean surge overtime. Tahiti was formed 200 000 years ago. The cavities are now filled with brackish water. The water, the humidity, the greenery, the pelagic (ocean) birds make up for the atmosphere of the place and its charm.
  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Taharuu Beach
  • The "Taharu'u beach" located on the plain part of the south-west coast of Papa-ra is made up of volcanic sand. Its shore opens up directly to the open ocean. Surfers worship this place when the swelling season comes around.
  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Marae Mahaeiatea
  • We shall stop by and visit the "Marae Mahaiatea" another place where our ancestors (or our "Tupunas") worshipped but this time belonging to the High dignitaries of the district of Papa-ra, the powerful clan of "Teva", back in the ancient times. A national coastal Marae where an entire district was represented before the gods. The terms "Taboo" or "Mana" is where these concepts came about.
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   The Water Gardens of Vaipahi
  • "Vai-pahi garden" is government owned water garden. Many of the tropical plants tha are on the island today can be found there. Native or introduced, these introduced shrubs/plants/creepers brought a little extra to our island. It is located a nearby plateau where all the water comes crashing at the waterfall there. We shall stop there for a visit.
  • Duration: 20 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Restaurant Bar du Musee Gauguin
  • Lunch time (free time): The place belongs to Roger and Juliette. Roger is an English man whose destiny was changed by meeting Juliette and was an opportunity to set up this business. It is a popular venue for weddings and privatized events. An amazing fish tank is located on the outside of the restaurant where huge Black-Jacks (Dark Carangue) squander around. (Important note: Food and beverage are not included in the tour fee)
  • Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Admission Ticket Free
  • Stop At:   Tautira
  • Finally after lunch, we shall drive about 45 minutes towards the "Tautira village" which is the Highlight of this tour but also the end of the road. The place has an astounding overlook to the "Vai-Te-Piha" valley across it. A deep valley where its mountains most often suffocate into the clouds. After this, we shall return to town, but this time by the east-coast side so you get to see both sides of Tahiti the great (or "Tahiti Nui") back to the finish line.
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Admission Ticket Free
